Let’s go through the top four most popular locks, which are padlocks deadbolts, knob locks, and levers. Each of these locks is used for a different purpose, and each purpose means something to you because the chances are you’re going to use one of these locks sometimes in your life.   

Padlocks: 

Padlocks are not the typical locks, because they are not permanently attached to anything else, and are a mobile lock that you can use on a variety of other things. If you have a storage unit you probably have a padlock attached to your storage unit to make sure no one enters and steals your property. Or you used one of these locks in high school in your locker. 

Padlocks are come in a range of sizes and are free standing and portable. There are two main variations in padlocks which are combination and keyed. Combination locks have one or multiple dials that open the lock when the correct key combination is entered by the lock. You create your own combination and you can enter the padlock and take it off at your will. 

Key padlocks have several different options when purchasing them. If a padlock is not rekeying able then you can’t change the key that opens the locks, kind of like the locks and keys that you use on the front door of your house. Padlocks can be non-key-retaining, or key-retaining and key-retaining padlocks don’t allow the key is removed while the padlock is open. Using a keyed padlock means that you’re in control of opening and closing your locks with your key, and you can control access to who has control.   

Deadbolts: 

Deadbolts are generally installed on external doors for residential properties and on the garage door that connects your garage to your house. These locks are so popular because they make it almost impossible for someone to break-in. You can’t simply break down the door to get through when there’s a deadbolt lock, and you just simply use a wire to get through a deadbolt lock. You have to have the right key to get into this lock. 

There are three kinds of deadbolt locks that we are going to go through and explain why each one is important in its own right. 
Single Cylinder Deadbolts: Are the deadbolt locks found on the majority of American homes. They use the key cylinder on the outside and a thumb turn on the inside. Which means you can access the door from the inside without a key, but you need a key on the outside of the door. The only weakness with a single cylinder deadbolt is the possibility of someone getting inside your house through a nearby window, and then using the inside to get out.  

Double Cylinder Deadbolt: Uses a key cylinder on the inside and the outside of the door to solving that issue. This means every time you use this door you have to use a key no matter what side you’re on. The downside to this is that it creates a hazardous situation whenever there’s a fire or any other emergency that forces you to leave your property quickly. It’s also a major inconvenience to have to use your key every single time you open up that door no matter what side you’re of the door. 

Lockable Thumb turn: This is a hybrid of both the single cylinder and double cylinder. The way that these lock works is that it has the normal cylinder lock on the outside, but it also has a lockable thumb turn on the inside. You can choose when you want the inside lock locked. This is really handy especially if you have kids and you don’t want them opening up the door and somehow getting hurt in the process.   

Knob Locks: 

Knob locks are most commonly used and installed in residential situations on the exterior of doors along with the deadbolts that are attached to the lock. Knob locks shouldn’t be used as the security for exterior doors unless there is a deadbolt lock as well. These locks are really easy to break through, which causes a problem with your residential properties security. Having knob locks on your interior doors is no problem because you want it to be easy to get through and use the doors on your interior doors. Anything else will create a problem.   

Lever Handle Locks: 

Lever handle locks are most frequently used for inner doors on commercial settings because they are easier then knob locks to open. Since they have a larger pushdown style rather than the knob lock that forces the user to grasp the lock and then turn. If you have a lot of customers who are elder, your young kids then you might prefer locks that are easier to open. Lever handle locks are these kinds of locks because there are no problems when trying to open these locks. Levers can be the target of torque attacks, which occurs after excessive pressure is applied to the handle. Over time you will need to replace these locks if they are constantly used every single day.
